The Institute of Modern Languages
The Institute of Modern Languages is a research and didactic unit of the Pedagogical Faculty which was founded on the initiative of the Dean of the Pedagogical Faculty on the 8th of October 2019. It grew out of the English Philology Department, which was created in 2015 as part of the Educational Sciences Institute. As a result, the Institute of Modern Languages is the heir to two rich and complementary traditions: Ignatian pedagogy and Anglophone culture. From the outset it has emphasized a personal approach to students and has sought to prepare them for life within in a broader community – both local and global – by helping them to develop their linguistic, communicative and social competences. The Institute’s mission is to build respect for different cultures and the ability to communicate not only in English but also in other European languages. The challenges of a rapidly globalizing world require not only a fluent knowledge of English but also of other languages, broadening our horizons and allowing us to develop a better understanding of other worldviews and perspectives, whilst counteracting the negative phenomenon of linguistic uniformization. Thanks to the carefully designed study program, which underlines multilingualism as well as communicative and cultural competences, it produces graduates capable of responding to the contemporary challenges of the social environment. This is reinforced by the research efforts of the academic staff, who explore a range of issues in topics which bring together the world of language, text and everyday experience.
Graduates of the Institute are prepared to work in institutions connected with education, business and culture, both in Poland and abroad. They possess fluent knowledge of English and a second foreign language (Spanish, German). They have the opportunity to put their language skills to the test not only during classes, but also during trips as part of international exchange programs. The Institute also boasts a particularly active Students’ Club, with students organizing and participating in events and trips which bring their studies to life.
The research profile of the Institute encompasses fields typical for philological studies: literature, culture and applied linguistics. The Department of Literary Studies specializes in the study of the history of literature and the intertextuality of books for adults and younger audiences. The Language and Culture Studies Department conducts interdisciplinary research in sociolinguistics and English Teaching methodology. At the heart of the activity of both Departments is research into the links and interactions between Polish and foreign cultures. This includes, among others, research into Polish and English modernism, the influence of English on the Polish language, and on migrations.
